The grapes are sourced from the well-regarded premier cru site, Les Lavières, which has a warm, south-facing exposure that encourages generous ripening. Its name derives from the clay “laves” that define the soils, contributing to wines of fuller body yet supple, succulent texture.

Following the challenges of 2021, the 2022 vintage in Burgundy was characterised by abundance and excellence. Despite heatwaves and the largest drought in Burgundy since 1976, 2022 emerged as a generous vintage, with excellent quality and yields far exceeding the three previous years. The growing season began with a cold winter, which delayed budburst and ensured most vineyards escaped April frosts unscathed. Optimal spring conditions followed and the vines grew quickly, with flowering taking place in mid-May. The summer was hot and dry, yet rain showers at the end of June replenished water reserves and allowed vines to thrive. Harvest began at the end of August and lasted until mid-September and the quality of the fruit harvested was excellent, with vibrant aromatics and balancing acidity.

The grapes were hand-picked and underwent fermentation with indigenous yeasts, with 15% whole bunches included to enhance aromatic lift and structure. The must was gently hand-plunged throughout a 10-day maceration on skins before pressing. Maturation took place over 10 months in French oak barriques, 33% of which were new, with the remainder in older barrels to preserve balance and finesse. This approach brings supple structure, subtle spice and refined oak integration while retaining the purity and character of the fruit.

The 2022 Chatto Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières opens with lifted red-berry aromas of strawberry and cherry, touched by floral notes and the vineyard’s characteristic flinty edge. The palate is supple and pure, showing bright red fruit supported by fine, silky tannins and a subtle earthy complexity. A saline, chalky thread brings tension and freshness, leading to a graceful, lingering finish with gentle spice and finesse.
