Cantina Diomede comprises 200 hectares of organically farmed vineyards in northern Puglia, close to the town of Canosa. Oenologist Dennis Verdecchia works hard here to obtain high-quality, healthy grapes, with most operations carried out manually.

The ‘Lama di Pietra’, made solely from Nero di Troia, is full-bodied with red fruit aromatics, offering perfect balance on the palate. The ‘Canace’ Nero di Troia is a step up. Aged for 12 months in large French oak barrels, this wine balances richness with fresh acidity, velvety tannins, and a spicy finish.

The name "Canace" comes from blending the initial syllables of the towns where the wineries are located - Canosa, 480 metres above sea level in the DOC Castel del Monte area in the hills north of Bari, and Acerenza, on the foothills of Vulture in Basilicata. Soils are calcareous and rocky, and vines are vertical shoot positioned and Guyot trained, with a density of 3,500 per hectare.

The 2022 vintage will be remembered for its quality grapes despite the challenges faced. The winter months were dry and provided small water reserves, this was exacerbated by the hot and dry summer that followed. Despite providing challenges, there was no was no disease pressure for the vines. Rain finally arrived in August and provided much needed relief to the vineyard and enabled great balance in time for the harvest.

The grapes were left to partially dry on the vines. Upon arrival at the winery, they underwent a maceration on the skins lasting 15 to 20 days followed by fermentation at controlled temperatures using selected yeasts. Post fermentation, the wine was first aged eight months in concrete tanks and then 12 months in French oak barriques before bottling and release.

This wine is deep red in colour with hints of violet. The complex bouquet offers warm spice, cocoa, coffee, liquorice and ripe berry fruit. Soft and velvety on the palate, this full-bodied Canace displays a fresh acidity balanced with elegant tannins and lingering spice characters.
