The ’Villa di Trefiano’, a fine example of Renaissance architecture built in 1570, was bought by the Contini Bonacossi family (who also own Capezzana) in the 1920s. The Villa, which lies 200 metres above sea level, is surrounded by five hectares of vineyards planted with Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Contini Bonacossi family run the Villa di Trefiano estate with the same respect for tradition and attention to detail seen at Capezzana. In 1979, the late Vittorio Contini Bonacossi decided to produce a wine exclusively from this estate, offering a different interpretation of Carmignano. The Carmignano Riserva blends Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 350-litre barrels for around 18 months, to give an opulent yet elegant wine.

The Villa is surrounded by five hectares of vineyards which are located in the Carmignano DOCG. The Villa di Trefiano is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are situated at approximately 200 metres above sea level, facing south, south-east and south-west. Soils are schistous clay with limestone. The 22-year-old vines are planted at a density of 4,440 per hectare and are cordon spur trained.

The 2021 vintage began with a cold winter, followed by a rainy spring and a severe frost that damaged some vines. Summer was dry, with cool nights and sunny days that helped preserve the grapes’ fresh fruit character. An atypical and complex vintage, the challenging weather reduced yields, but the good summer produced grapes of exceptionally high quality.

Fermentation lasted seven days and took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Temperatures did not exceed 28ºC during fermentation. After 13 days of maceration the wine was aged for 18 months in French tonneaux barrique, a mixture of new and up to 2-year old oak. The wine spent a further year in bottle before release.

This wine is deep ruby red in colour. On the nose, there are refined notes of cherry and raspberry that mingle with herbal notes and spice. Structured yet elegant, the Trefiano is soft yet firm with supple tannins and well-balanced acidity. Delicious raspberry, cherry combine with undertones of spice into a long and persistent finish.
