Its name derives from the Badassière vineyard, situated near the small town of Pomérol, which in the 18th century belonged to Baron Charles Emmanuel, a colourful character rumoured to be the illegitimate son of King Louis XV. These wines are made exclusively for Liberty Wines at the Cave de Pomérols cooperative by winemaker Marguerite Vasseur and Matt Thomson of Blank Canvas.

The region benefits from a sunny, warm climate that encourages ripe flavours to develop in the grapes, while coastal breezes help to retain freshness and aromatics. Picpoul de Pinet is the co-operative’s speciality. Marguerite selects parcels of grapes as they enter the winery to ensure that only the best quality fruit goes into the wine. The approach across the range is non-interventionist, with minimal or no skin contact, no malolactic fermentation and no oak, to retain the purity and character of each variety.

The vines are located on clay-limestone terraces which overlook the Etang de Thau - the largest of a string of lagoons that stretch along the French coast from the Rhône River to the foothills of the Pyrenées. They enjoy a Mediterranean climate, tempered by maritime influences given the proximity to the Etang de Thau. The grapes are both machine and hand harvested.

The 2024 vintage in the Languedoc proved challenging, with an unusually wet spring followed by damaging late frosts and hailstorms that created uneven development and increased mildew pressure. These adverse conditions resulted in significantly reduced yields across the region, though the grapes demonstrated remarkable resilience.

The grapes were pressed in a pneumatic press and underwent several hours of skin contact prior to fermentation in order to maximise flavour extraction from the aromatic Sauvignon Blanc grapes. A cool fermentation at 15°C helped to preserve the fresh fruit flavours. The wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation and there was no oak ageing. As a result, the style of the wine is pure, fresh and aromatic.

This Sauvignon Blanc is pale yellow in colour with lifted citrus fruit aromas on the nose as well as a touch of elderflower. The racy palate has apple, lemon and stone fruit character. The wine is medium bodied and has a refreshing, long finish.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0527/4297/9770/files/5d92d463-6042-49c9-9706-651b84fdec97__250x500_155f514c-edb5-438b-a539-c8698c790e07.png?v=1767026285
https://www.wine-ta.co.uk/products/2024-baron-de-badassiere-sauvignon-blanc-igp-cotes-de-thau-liberty
