The sister property of Third Growth estate Château Calon-Ségur, Capbern was owned by the Gasqueton family for ten generations before being sold in 2012 following the death of Denise Capbern-Gasqueton. Despite this change in ownership, Château Capbern continues to live up to its historically excellent reputation.

The 41-hectare Saint-Estèphe property is located east of Calon-Ségur and overlooks the Gironde River. The vineyards are planted on a mix of gravel, limestone, and clay soils, ideally suited to the hot summers that Bordeaux is known for. Layered under gravel, water-retaining clay protects the vines during hot, dry years.

Château Capbern comprises a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, aged for 18 months in oak barriques of which 40% is new. The final wine consistently displays charming cassis fruit and structured, yet supple tannins.

The 41-hectare property is located to the east of Calon-Ségur near the village of Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde on gravel and limestone soils. Saint-Estèphe is one of the northernmost communes on the left bank. The water-retaining, cool clay soils underneath the layer of gravel allow the vines to perform better than some of its neighbours during hot and dry years. The vines have an average age of 35 years.

The 2019 vintage in Saint-Estèphe began with a mild winter and early budburst, followed by a delayed and uneven flowering under cool, damp conditions in spring. From mid-June onwards, a hot, dry summer with cool nights allowed steady ripening, while the clay-rich soils of Saint-Estèphe helped vines withstand drought stress. A timely rainfall in late September brought much-needed balance, enabling gradual phenolic development. Harvest proceeded in excellent conditions, culminating in wines of purity, finesse, and elegance, marked more by freshness than sheer power.

This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The grapes were hand harvested and carefully selected in the vineyard and then on the winery sorting table. It was then fermented at 26°C for 20 days, with pump overs twice a day. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine spent 18 months ageing in 60% new oak barriques before bottling.

With an intense colour in the glass, this wine opens with a nose bursting with bright red cherries and cassis, along with subtle hints of violet and spice.
